Recipe Ingredients Needed

All you need to make this smoked salmon appetizer recipe are 6 simple ingredients:

Full ingredient measurements and detailed instructions are located in the recipe card at the bottom of this post!

TIP: If you’re looking for bagels and cream cheese with simple, healthy ingredients – some of my personal favourites are these sprouted bagels from Silver Hills and this cream cheese from Arla! I find them both at my local Whole Foods 🙂

Recipe Modifications (Other Ways To Serve!)

  1. Feel free to use any variety of bagel that you’d like! If you’re gluten-free, you can use a gluten-free bagel.
  2. Instead of cream cheese, you could do this with smashed avocado. OR you can do both – alternating avocado and cream cheese on different bites for a more colourful tray!
  3. If you don’t eat dairy, you can follow the avocado tip above or use a dairy-free alternative to cream cheese.
  4. If you enjoy capers, feel free to add them to these bites.
  5. You can skip the arugula, but I do love that it sneaks in some leafy greens 😉
  6. If you can’t find everything but the bagel seasoning, my tip would be to purchase “everything” bagels instead.
  7. You can serve these with or without skewers, as desired!

SERVING IDEA: If you don’t want to serve this on bagels, you could also do this over cucumber rounds, spread on crackers (no toothpick), or you could serve this as crostini (over sliced/toasted baguette)!

Tips For Making This Recipe

  1. I would advise cutting each bagel in half, then cutting each half down the middle. Then cut each of those halves into 3 pieces. This will make 12 “bites” per bagel.
  2. Add cream cheese and other toppings to the bagel bites, after cutting the bagel. This will make everything look cleaner and be less messy!
  3. Arugula bundles can be folded in half to make them fit better onto the bagel bites. Gently press them into the cream cheese to get them to stick.
  4. The smoked salmon should be cut into smaller pieces before adding to the bites as well. I cut each piece in half or in quarters, depending on the size of the smoked salmon slice!
  5. If you’re serving this recipe right away (or shortly thereafter), you can toast the bagels first if you’d like. I personally LOVE toasted bagels.
  6. If you’re making this recipe in advance, you can keep everything in an airtight container in the fridge for a few hours beforehand. I would not recommend toasting the bagels in this instance. It will still taste good, though – promise!

Ingredients

  • 2 regular-sized bagels (any variety!)
  • Approx. 1/3 cup cream cheese
  • 1 cup baby arugula
  • Approx. 85 grams smoked salmon (many packs are sold in 85-100g sizes or 3-3.5 ounces)
  • 1/4 cup fresh dill
  • 1/2 tsp everything but the bagel seasoning
  • Optional: lemon, to serve

Instructions

  • If you're serving this right away and prefer your bagels toasted, start by toasting bagels. Otherwise, cut each bagel in half, then cut each half down the middle. Then, cut those halves into 3 even pieces. This will make 12 "bites" per bagel.
  • Divide and spread cream cheese on top of each bagel bite.
  • Then, fold a bundle of about 3 arugula leaves in half. Gently press onto cream cheese to get them to stick.
  • Cut smoked salmon into smaller pieces – I cut each "slice" into either half or quarters, depending on the size! Place one piece on top of each bagel bite, folded if necessary.
  • Top each bagel bite with a sprig of fresh dill and a sprinkle of Everything But The Bagel Seasoning.
  • If desired, you can add a skewer to each bite and serve with a squeeze of lemon juice overtop. Enjoy!

Notes

*SERVINGS: This recipe as written will make 24 “bites.” This will serve about 6-8 people, at 3-4 bites per person as an appetizer!
*MAKING IN ADVANCE: If you’re making this recipe in advance, you can keep everything in an airtight container in the fridge for a few hours beforehand. I would not recommend toasting the bagels in this instance.
